Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

An 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Eastern Japan near the city of Sendai has triggered a tsunami and led to more than 350 fatalities. Sendai has a population of 2,370,280 and is located only 370 km away from Tokyo. The final death toll is expected to be much higher. The impact of the tremor caused extensive damage to infrastructure: several airports have been closed and many communities are without power. 5,000 people have been evacuated around the nuclear plant in Fukushima due to potential hazards in the area.

Haiti’s Elections and Reconstruction Efforts under Review as OAS Assistant Secretary General Convenes High-Level Meeting

Close to 200 stakeholders gathered at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC, this week, as the Assistant Secretary General of the hemispheric body, Ambassador Albert Ramdin, convened an extraordinary meeting of the Haiti Group of Friends to discuss the situation in the country, one month ahead of Presidential Elections scheduled to take place November 28, 2010.

Active Hurricane Season Predicted

altAn “active to extremely active” hurricane season is expected for the Atlantic Basin this year according to the seasonal outlook issued by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center – a division of the National Weather Service. As with every hurricane season, this outlook underscores the importance of having a hurricane preparedness plan in place.

Across the entire Atlantic Basin for the six-month season, which begins June 1, NOAA is projecting a 70 percent probability of the following ranges: 14 to 23 Named Storms, including 8 to 14 Hurricanes, of which 3 to 7 could be Major Hurricanes.

PAHO Responds to Cholera Outbreak in Haiti

National Response Strategy to the Cholera Epidemic was presented by the MSPP (Ministère de la santé publique et de la population). It prioritizes measures to protect families at the community level, strengthen primary health care centers already operating across the nation, and establish a network of special Cholera Treatment Centers and designated hospitals for treatment for severe cases.

Chile Prepares for Reconstruction

altA report from the Ministry of Health, published on 22 March, indicates that the earthquake and tsunami of 27 February left 130 hospitals with some type of damage: 50 with minor damage, eight that will need major repairs, and 17 that will need to be reconstructed. The cost of the disaster has been estimated at US$ 2.7 billion. PAHO/WHO has deployed regional experts in coordination, communications, water and sanitation, and administration to support the Country Representative.
